1996– Let’s Make Limited Editions and Number the Cards

This was a special year that changed card collecting.

Card Makers came up with a new idea of limiting the number of cards to 150 (the Flair Legacy cards), 250 (SPx Record Breaker Autograph cards – they were hand numbered) and 499 (the E-X2000 Credential cards). They actually numbered each card individually.

This created a real excitement when opening a pack with numbered cards. The feeling was like Charlie from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory in hopes you found the prized possession of a numbered card, or the “Golden Ticket”.

Card brands he’s in are:
· Collectors Choice
· Bowman’s Best
· E-X2000, a brand from SkyBox.
· Finest
· Flair
· Fleer
· Hoops
· Metal
· SkyBox Premium
· SP
· SPx, a brand from Upper Deck
· Stadium Club
· Topps
· Topps Stars
· UD3, a brand from Upper Deck
· Ultra
· Upper Deck
· Z-Force, a brand from SkyBox

Other new ideas are:
1) Bowman’s Best / Finest Gold / Stadium Club Class Acts / Topps Stars have a brand new Refractor called the “Atomic” Refractor. When you look at this card, it looks like it’s made of diamonds the way it sparkles. Very nice!
2) Topps has a limited “Chrome” version of most of their cards.
3) SkyBox has a limited “Rubies” version of their 2 base cards.
4) UD3 has an Autographed card called Court Commemoratives which appears to be on a piece of wood, rather than cardboard stock.
5) Ultra has a limited “Platinum” version of their 3 base cards.
