This was a surprise. He decides baseball is a game he’d
like to try out for.
OK…..
Well this creates an interesting situation for card makers as
now he’s in baseball and basketball sets.
On the Baseball card side, he’s in sets from:
· Action Packed
· Classic
· Collectors Choice, this is a new low end brand from Upper
Deck. The idea is designed for kids with limited income to be
able to pick up a pack of cards with great photo at the price
of 99 cents a pack so they can collect too as card prices are
starting to go up due to added costs for production of better
looking cards with thicker card stock.
· ProCard, Fleer’s minor league baseball card.
· SP, Upper Deck introduces this new brand.
· Ted Williams Gardiner card company
· Upper Deck
On the basketball side, he’s in:
· Collectors Choice
· Emotion, a brand from SkyBox
· Finest
· Flair, an upscale brand from Fleer (and more upscale
then Ultra), with much thicker card stock, and premium photo’s
and gloss on the cards.
· SP
· Topps Embossed
The new word this year is “Die Cut”. The SP brand
came out with the Die Cut card which has a cut rounded top left
hand corner of the card. They decide to make less of the die cut
cards which is a good idea giving the impression of the card being
limited, however the cards look like they are missing a corner
and collectors are not impressed enough to chase after them.
Another new idea from Collectors Choice was a:
1) Limited “Players Club” version to their cards.
Each card has a stamping on the card with a silver “Players
Club” logo on it distinguishing it from the regular version.
2) Even more limited “Players Club Platinum” version.
Each of these cards has a stamping on the card with a silver Players
Club logo with an added “P” attached to the logo.
Also distinguishing it from the regular version, the photo on
the front of the card has a foil finish.
