The Bulls get there 1st Championship vs. Magic Johnson and the Lakers, and this produces demand for more of his pictures on cards.

From a Collector stand point; there are all kinds of surprises this year.

Fleer produces:
1) many cards. From All Star, Team Leader, League Leader, etc.
2) a wax pack wrapper return policy for an “Acrylic 3D” card of the player of your choice. Collectors did not have much interest in the return policy and that produced few of the acrylic 3D cards. Collectors would find out later that those cards would be hard to find.
3) a card for Tony’s Pizza.

Hoops produces:
1) many cards. From All Star, League Leader, Supreme Court, etc.
2) Championship cards.
3) cards for McDonalds.
4) Prototype cards. One on card board, and one on a piece of metal. The metal one is REALLY hard to find.

SkyBox came out with 10+ cards.

Upper Deck gets to produce cards. They produce:
1) A very popular high tech card with a full front picture which is a hologram.
2) Security from counterfeiters with a hologram on the back of each card.
3) Great photography.
4) Great cutting and centering.

Pro Set was a football card producer. They tried a shot at basketball with a prototype card of five Players (Tom Chambers, Patrick Ewing, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, and Karl Malone). They did not get a license to produce basketball cards. The prototype cards are difficult to find and command a high price if you can find any of the five.
