1990 – The Year Card Companies Got Serious About Basketball

Baseball cards we’re getting high prices for Hall of Famers and great Players. Basketball, Football, and Hockey were cheaper alternatives to find great Players at bargain prices that people could afford.

Basketball was getting better TV coverage as Michael and the Bulls were exciting to watch.

Card companies realized basketball was for real and collectors are showing interest.

Two companies tried to join Fleer and Hoops. One succeeded and one did not.
1) Action Packed was a football card producer and took a shot at basketball with a prototype card. They did not get a license to produce basketball cards. Finding the prototype is difficult commands a decent price if you can find one.
2) SkyBox did receive the opportunity to produce cards and they came up with at the time a computer generated background that was colorful and pretty cool.

Under the regular card size format, this year produced some of the first horizontal pictures on cards of Michael. Nike did produce a horizontal card in 1985 which is modeled after the “Jumpman” Logo, however it was oversized and does not fit in my frames that I display my cards in with the other regular sized card I have in my collection.
